An expansion vessel is an important part of a modern closed heating system. The vessel is designed with a bladder or diaphragm in the centre of the vessel. As water is heated it expands, to absorb this expansion the diaphragm swells allowing for the expansion of the water in the vessel. As the water cools the diaphragm shrinks back to normal.
